dencypting in linux

hello everyone iam currently scripting in linux and i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the command was for dencypting a text file???

This would obviously depend on what the file was encrypted with!

At a guess you are possibly looking for the crypt function - not all variants of linux have this installed/compiled
