Forum upgrade!

As you have probably noticed already, the forum has been upgraded today.

The main changes to be aware of:

- Full UTF-8 support
- Better tracking of Read/unread posts
- Separate RSS feeds are available for each Forum, so you can follow just the areas that interest you.

Everything seems to be working, but a few tweaks still need to be done to the colours/styles.

The new themes are Air (the default), Earth, Fire and Technetium.

Re: Forum upgrade!

One side effect of the upgrade is that the RSS/Atom feed is now on a different url, (rss is now a built-in feature rather than an add-on patch)

This means RSS readers will need to re-subscribe to the new feed(s)

Re: Forum upgrade!

Huh.  The old URL ss64.org/rss.php got me to this post just fine ... perhaps there a redirect/rewrite rule in there?

Re: Forum upgrade!

Control characters are stripped out from whatever you post, this is a 'feature' rather than a bug as control characters were causing a lot of RSS readers (including Firefox) to fail.

The new forum layout is Unicode compliant, so probably the best workaround is to pick some Unicode character like 回 to represent the control character.

Re: Forum upgrade!

Another small upgrade was done today, you will have been logged out and will need to log in again.

Changes include:

# Moved the 'mark as read' link to the bottom-right of the index and new posts pages.
# Fixed an error with validation of RSS feeds.
# Added permalinks to the breadcrumbs for searches.
# Made the search indexer recognize, and strip out, UTF-8 punctuation and symbols.
# Added a preview button on the quick reply area.

Re: Forum upgrade!

I just noticed that most of the Avatars have been borked in that last update, those of you who had one will probably need to re-upload it, sorry about that.

Edit: The missing Avatars should be back now. smile

Re: Forum upgrade!

Another forum upgrade was done today, we now have some new Anti-spam measures in place.

A few other changes you may notice: Ranks have now gone, instead we have Groups and everyone is either a 'Member' or a 'New Member'.

New signups will automatically get promoted from New Member to Member after making a few posts, they will then get the ability to post links and edit their previous posts. (again these limits are mainly in place to discourage spammers.)
